The Enneagram is a personality assessment that explains an individuals motivations, basic desires, fears, tendencies and preferences. Unlike other personality frameworks, the Enneagram provides depth and tangible steps toward personal growth and intentional self improvement. Using the Enneagram in therapy can promote deep self discover and enrich the counseling process.
The Enneagram can be thought of like a person’s individual mosaic. Everyone has different pieces of shape, color, and size that makes them unique, but it is up to the person to learn how to put those pieces together to create the wonderful mosaic their personality can become. At Mosaic Creative Counseling, we can help guide that process.
Using the Enneagram Personality tool in therapy works best with adults and couples. For adults clients seeking individual therapy the Enneagram can help them reframe their relationship to anxiety, depression, trauma and toxic relationships. Adults who are using the Enneagram in therapy are able to understand themselves and others on a deeper level. The Enneagram is also a wonderful tool for couples counseling! It gives couples new understanding of each other and tools to solve communication problems in the future. Many Couples and Adults find the Enneagram gets them out of "feeling stuck" in life and "out of a rut" in their relationships. Because children and younger teens are still developing their unique personality this form of therapy might not be the best fit.
Do you noticed unhelpful patterns in your life and relationships? Have you found themes of anxiety, depression, shame, guilt or even fear? Are you often asking yourself: "Why do I keep acting this way? Why am I always feeling like this? Why are my relationships always having the same problems?" The Enneagram can help offer self compassion and insight into these patterns. It gives words and a compassionate explanation to why we all do the things we do. This tool gives words and explanation to the patterns in life and relationships we could not understand before. But unlike other personality assessments, then Enneagram doesn't just stop at awareness and understanding; it offers a tangible path toward personal growth and change. Enneagram Therapy offers clients a new way toward personal and relational growth compared to traditional talk therapy.
At Mosaic, Enneagram Therapy is facilitated by a trained and credentialed enneagram professional who is also a licensed therapist. The Enneagram is more than a one time personality test. Practitioners must be trained in the Enneagram to use it fully as a tool for growth. While there are countless free Enneagram test on the internet, our Enneagram Practitioner at Mosaic is trained to perform a formal and in depth "typing interview." This helps clients walk away with clarity, feeling understood. When used by a trained professional, the Enneagram is a way to better understand and improve one’s life and relationships.
Enneagram Therapy sessions can be scheduled for adults, spouses, parents, college students and partners. Because the Enneagram is a personality inventory, it is not effective with children or young adolescents due to their continually developing personality. A typical enneagram therapy session:
At Mosaic, enneagram therapy sessions are facilitated by a Credentialed Enneagram Professional who is also a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist. Below are some common myths about using the enneagram in therapy.
The Enneagram is a tool for personal growth. Just like any tool, it can only be as helpful as someone is trained in using it. So anyone can discuss their Enneagram results from a free online test with their therapist. However, when you see an Enneagram trained practitioner they are able to type you through interview, so you are more likely to find your accurate Enneagram type. Additionally, when your therapist is a trained Enneagram professional, they understand how to use Enneagram concepts like: subtypes, growth lines, stress points, triads, and wings to help you grow.
An Enneagram Coach can be a wonderful resource, however they are not trained to help clients handle complex issues rooted in mental health patterns such as anxiety, depression, self esteem, toxic relationships, couples communication issues, trauma or other concerns. If these issues are reoccurring and consuming patterns in your life, a therapist would be the best fit. An Enneagram Coach will help you work through mindset issues, whereas a therapist who uses the Enneagram can help you heal from childhood wounds, engage your body to decrease anxiety, end unhealthy relationship cycles, set healthy boundaries and improve communication skills.
When working with an enneagram therapist specifically, you are working with a clinician who is trained in both mental health as well as the intricacies of the Enneagram. So while you can do research the Enneagram at home, which is helpful, engaging in therapy with a trained enneagram therapist can get you out of stuck places in your relationships and help you find blind spots in your life. Enneagram Therapists will help clients understand themselves on a deeper level and engage in specific directives to meet work with their personality type not against, as they achieve their mental health goals.
Ian Morgan Cron, a trained psychotherapist and a master teacher of the Enneagram described, “The Enneagram doesn’t put you in a box, It shows you the box you are already in and teaches you how to get out of it.” Trained Enneagram professionals help clients have compassion and understanding about thier personality, but use concepts such as subtypes, growth lines, stress points, wings, triads and centers to grow beyond their enneagram type.
