Somatic Therapy is the practice of incorporating the body into the healing therapeutic process. At Mosaic, somatic therapy incorporates body based interventions such as yoga practice, mindful movement, meditation, trauma release exercises and more. Somatic Therapy helps clients get connected with their body and their emotions in a safe and supported way. It can be surprising how much of our lives we live just going through the motions and not actually “in our body.” Somatic Therapy can help with this. Unlike traditional exercise or mindfulness classes, somatic therapy is more about the therapeutic process of fulling experiencing and being present in our body than acquiring physical skills.
Somatic Therapy uses both directed and open-ended sessions to incorparate the body into the healing process within a psycho-therapeutic relationship. A somatic therapist is a credentialed therapist who has specialized training to use intentional body based directives.
Are you feeling disconnected from your body? Do you often feel like emotions are too overwhelming to feel and sit with? Have you noticed yourself numbing out? Somatic Therapy can help you experience life connected to your body and connected to your emotions without overwhelm. Somatic Therapy is for anyone regardless of age or physical limitation or skills. Somatic therapy is helpful in addressing anxiety, depression, trauma, emotional behavioral issues, identity, chronic stress and more. Somatic therapy offers clients a different form of communication, which is often helpful in therapy where clients are encouraged to bring up difficult emotional topics. Somatic therapy can also be a great fit for a person looking to incorporate movement and self care into thier therapy as it offers a creative way to stay grounded and present while processing difficult topics.
We know through decades of research that trauma and stress are stored in the body. All of our intense emotions take root in our physical body and often result in more distress and discomfort. Did you know you that when an individual is focused on movement, breath-work or mindfulness, their stress levels can decrease? Movement can even release chemicals in the brain associated with happiness like dopamine and serotonin. Somatic therapy is founded in the research that as we move and engage in bodies, we can release the stress stored in our body and our brain creates new pathways for learning and healing. Through somatic therapy our body can actually have a corrective experience and recover from past trauma. Individuals can feel their emotions and connect with their bodies safely without overwhelm. Somatic Therapy offers a space for clients to create a sense of freedom and control over their present reality and their body. Somatic therapy actually reaches clients in a way that traditional talk therapy falls short.
A Somatic Therapist is a credentialed clinician who receives specialized training in a somatic or body based therapy modality such as yoga, mindfulness, breath-work, massage etc.. This specialized higher education helps them understand what how to safely activate the body and specific directives to connect to body and mind in therapy sessions. Somatic Therapists learn how to utilize movement in a trauma informed and culturally inclusive way. A trained somatic therapist can facilitate a somatic therapy session with both direct or open ended instruction to help clients process and grow. Somatic therapists are experts in helping clients of all ages overcome, grow and change through active movement and body based interventions.
Have you felt disconnected from your emotion? Maybe you’re completly numb to them or completely overwhelmed by them? Do you find it hard to pay attention to your body’s signals for stress? Like overtired, hungry, anxious, sleep issues, and even physical pain like headaches or soreness?
With our holistic model at Mosaic, we know that body and mind are interconnected, so healing requires attention to both the body and mind. Many clients get stuck “talking” and repeating thier story, without making progress. Somatic Therapy helps the body recover as well as the mind. Many clients see better results from a somatic therapy treatment than traditional talk therapy.
Somatic Therapy can help with symptoms including but not limited to:

Sound healing is a therapeutic practice that harnesses the power of various sounds, like singing bowls, chimes, gentle melodies, or rhythmic drumming, to create a calming and immersive experience. Through these soothing sounds and intentional frequencies, sound healing fosters relaxation and inner harmony, allowing individuals to shed stress, anxiety, and emotional burdens. By tuning into resonant frequencies, sound healing encourages mindfulness and self-awareness, providing a unique path to emotional relief and self-discovery. It offers a non-intrusive, holistic approach to achieving inner balance, resilience, and overall well-being.
Incorporating yoga practice into therapy helps clients become more aware of their body and can facilitate healing. This somatic therapy process combines the benefits of yoga with the benefits of psychotherapy. During this somatic process the body can learn to feel safe, relaxed and regulated while also addressing mental health goals. This leads to significant decrease in symptoms and boost mental health. Mosaic offers yoga + psychotherapy to the Tallahassee community and the state of Florida.
Mindfulness & Meditation can help clients regulate the body while thoughts and feelings flow. This process helps lower our internal defenses and get in touch with some of our subconscious motivations. Many clients are feeling stuck in talk therapy but this mindful somatic practice can help new insights flow from the body. This somatic therapy techinque offers the Tallahassee community a holistic path to recovery and helps clients finally feel in control of their lives.
Breathwork is the backbone of regulating the nervous system. Therefore breathwork is essential for addressing regulation issues such as anxiety and trauma that also have roots in the central nervous system. When we engage the body with movement it opens up new connections in the mind to make healing connections quicker and more effective. Combining breathwork and movement in therapy can help clients learn to self regulate and encourage healing from somatic symptoms such as anxiety attacks, sleep issues, chronic pain, etc.
Below are some common myths about somatic therapy.
Yoga Classes are about building physical strength, awareness and harmony in both the mind and body. Yoga classes focus on a group yoga flow. While Yoga classes are wonderful for self care and coping, they use specific yoga flows cultivated for a group. Somatic Therapy incorporates yoga, mindfulness, breath-work, sound healing and other movement. Somatic therapy is tailored to a specfic person’s therapeutic needs and goals. It is one-on-one trauma informed sessions helping clients actively engage and listen to their body. Somatic Therapy values the individual process and needs, while taking into consideration that person’s trauma history and mental health goals.
Somatic therapy is for anyone regardless of skills, talent or training. It is more about connecting to the current body you have and not teaching your body new skills. Somatic therapists will create an environment that allows safe ways to connect with the body, and foster emotion exploration. Somatic Therapists are trained in a variety of body based modalities, so that they can help clients as they explore and connect with themselves on a deeper level. You don’t need to be physically active, flexible, or “in shape,” just an open mind and a curiousity!
Several of our therapists are trained in these somatic therapy modalities to help clients in Tallahassee and the State of Florida fully recover from various mental health issues and somatic symptoms.
